Kulturhotellet Højhuset

The Culture Hotel Højhuset

Højhuset in Herning is a cultural hotel and the first of its kind in Denmark. Here, in the setting of a former college, you can stay in the old student rooms, which now stand out as newly renovated hotel rooms in an urban and minimalist style. As a guest, you don't just get a standard hotel experience. Culture and art are omnipresent in Højhuset, and you will experience delicious art, exciting architectural solutions, cultural events and communal dining in the iconic 60s building on the heath.

In Yrolí we are captivated by the Kulturhotellet. When you step inside, you are overwhelmed by another time, by big thoughts and visions, strong emotions and respect for both what has been, what is, and what is to come. The high-rise building exudes luxurious austerity, warm hospitality and has a wonderful unpretentious atmosphere.

Hotel on time

According to Kulturhotellet, sustainability is part of the place's central nervous system. Completely renovating an old and dilapidated college from 1961 rather than demolishing and building a new one is in itself sustainable. Everything that could be reused from the interior has been washed, repaired and restored and has been mixed with delicious Danish design. In the hotel rooms, you can still find the old sinks with chips and cracks and the now patinated mirrors from when the hotel rooms were student rooms at a college. The hotel has already received two awards for Sustainable Initiative of the Year and a building award for gentle restoration.

The Cultural Hotel Herning " The cultural hotel Højhuset is a very different hotel concept. Old and full of college history and at the same time ultra-modern. We believe that as a hotel guest, now and in the future, you will seek authentic hotel experiences where there is spirit and history. At the same time, the modern and conscious hotel guest will also prefer luxurious minimalism over an abundance that does not belong to our time. With us, there are no chocolates on the pillow or flat screens in the rooms. The minibar is shared on the floor, and who knows, maybe you will talk to your neighbor while you are standing and making coffee " - Brita Laugesen, Director

The hotel with many legs

As a cultural hotel, we dance around on several legs, and that is precisely what makes Højhuset so exciting and different. In addition to being a hotel, we are also a cultural center, corporate restaurant, course and event company and we have our own organic farm in the backyard. We try in many ways to integrate the different legs, so that, for example, as a course student you can go down and pet a sheep during the break, or that as a hotel guest you can check in to the conversation salon in the Fireplace Room together with all the locals. The carrots and our lamb hotdogs are sourced directly from the kitchen garden and the sheepfold. We celebrate the farm-to-table idea, eating seasonally, and as far as possible being self-sufficient in vegetables, flowers and lamb. We buy the rest locally .” – Brita Laugesen, Director

Sustainable suppliers

For Kulturhotellet, it is super important to think as green and as sustainable as possible. They grow their own organic vegetables and in this way try to be as self-sufficient as possible. They also have the silver label in organic, and soon they will also be Green Key certified as a hotel. In this context, it is therefore also quite natural that we select our suppliers with care, and Yroli's sustainable products fit in perfectly here. Our thoughts on luxurious frugality mean that we want to offer our guests a curated, delicious and minimalist selection, whether it is the delicious duvet, the good hand soap, the organic meal or Danish furniture design. We celebrate quality-conscious and sustainable choices in all contexts . – Brita Laugesen

Culture and community

No one is forced to sing from the High School Songbook when they visit Højhuset, but we promote culture and community in many ways. Firstly, the house itself invites community with the Fireplace Room as the center of the house, the Atriumgården in the middle and the many common rooms on the hotel floors. We also function as a cultural center, where local Herning residents come and hear lectures and concerts, participate in pop-up choirs and eat at the weekly communal meals – side by side with the hotel’s other guests. Culture and community is a framework that all our guests can check into if it fits into their schedule. ” – Line Thuesen, Head of Culture and Communications
