Fascia
Fascia, fascia, fascia, connective tissue, superficial fascia or profound fascia. Dear child has many names, but why is it even relevant to focus on fascia and connective tissue in relation to skin care? What is fascia and what is the difference between fascia and connective tissue? How can a greater awareness of fascia lead to healthier, balanced skin, and why have we chosen our first facial treatment to be called Fascia Therapy? In this theme of Beauty IQ, our Skin & Fascia Specialist Katja Kunimori Hollnagel has compiled everything you need to know about fascia!
Fascia and connective tissue
Although there are many terms, at Yrolí we have chosen to use the words fascia/fascia and connective tissue. Connective tissue is the general term, and fascia is a more specialized unit. The difference between connective tissue and fascia is mostly about function and structure, because the building blocks are largely the same: collagen, elastin, cellular matrix, hyaluronic acid, fibroblasts, myofibroblasts and a lot more. ” Connective tissue is the village. Fascia is the path system, the fences for the ball field or the network of wires that connect the street lights. ” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel

What is fascia? In Latin, fascia means assembly / band / bandage. Maybe you've tried to cook a piece of chicken or a tenderloin. The white membranes you cut away are fascia - thin membranes of connective tissue that wrap the muscle. It's the same in your body. The muscles and organs are wrapped in membranes of fascia to protect them from wear and tear, for example when you move and the muscles slide up and down on each other, keep them in the right place and give them the right shape. There are several layers to that explanation, also quite literally. It's not just your muscle that is in a fascia bag. Your muscle fibers are also bound and wrapped in fascia, and even down to the muscle cell level, fascia is represented. |

The skin layer is like a grapefruit
Think of a grapefruit. There is an outer shell similar to our skin. Underneath it is a white layer similar to the layer of fascia that lies just below the surface of the skin. In addition, there are all the grapefruit boats, which are separated by white membranes (fascia). The contents of each grapefruit boat are again wrapped. Fascia is not just in one place, with one function or in one form. Fascia is truly “all over the place”.
The development of the importance of fascia
" In the past, fascia was something that you cut through to get to the important things - the muscles and organs. Fascia was almost treated as a kind of envelope that wrapped muscles and organs securely. Today we know that fascia is a huge player in your ability to move freely and without pain. Fascia is very important for the body's ability to recharge, rebuild and feel well-being in the body. As the icing on the cake, your entire fascia network collects important information about how you and your body are feeling. " - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
Fascia and filo dough
“ If we go a layer deeper, your fascia is not just like a membrane a la a plastic bag, but more like a puff pastry or filo pastry with lots of layers on top of each other. Between these layers flows the fluid system. If all is well, there is a really good glide between the layers. This glide comes from the gel-like substance hyaluronic acid.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid has become a staple in the beauty industry's skincare jargon in recent years. However, hyaluronic acid is not something the beauty industry has a patent on having invented, as it is something the body produces itself, and it is a super important player in being able to move freely and without pain. Hyaluronic acid is also important for the skin, as hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture and provide fullness and elasticity. When you move your body, the body's hyaluronic acid becomes more fluid. Conversely, it becomes more stiff and sticky when there is no regular movement.
You have hyaluronic acid in your connective tissue, in your joints and in your skin as the substance that creates good “slip” between your fascia.
That's why movement is important.
When you have pain in your body, it is almost certain that your fascia is involved. When you can no longer move your right arm freely and lift it straight up towards the ceiling without hurting your back or neck, it is because your fascia is tight, dry and sticky. We have so many sensors in our connective tissue and fascia, so it is really something that can be felt. What is the solution? Movement. The good news is that anything that is good for your fascia, including movement, is also good for your connective tissue and your skin, both on your face and body.
“Here, movement does not equal abdominal-buttock-thigh training three times a week. Your tissue and your fascia benefit from being lengthened, exposed to controlled strain and moved with softness, so a little of everything is good. It can be a walk, yoga, dance, fascial flow and kettlebell. Conscious breathing is also good, because you also have hyaluronic acid in your lung tissue, so it needs to be moved too. ” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
The Yrolí Fascia Therapy treatment
Yrolí Fascia Therapy is the result of our dedication to creating a treatment that goes beyond the ordinary.
