Skin needs
Less is more
The skincare industry is often driven by increasing consumption. Your skincare routine should consist of a myriad of products and preferably a lot of layers. It can easily result in a skincare routine that is unnecessarily complicated and takes so long that it leaves you with a sense of guilt because we simply don't have enough time to get through the many products and steps. But does a skincare routine with many products and layers give the best results? We take a step back and go a layer deeper with our Skin & Fascia Specialist Katja Kunimori Hollnagel. Gain insight into what the skin really needs and why effective skincare doesn't have to take a long time, but can of just consist of one layer.
Leave the skin alone
At Yrolí, we are on the skin's side. We know from experience that you can go a long way by doing less. By working with the skin, giving space to its own functions and allowing the skin to be itself. That is one of the reasons why we strongly recommend using only one layer of skin care. We call it “One Layer”. The One Layer approach is based on the fact that by doing less with more of the right things, you can achieve healthy, balanced skin.
“Good skin care doesn’t have to take a long time, and good results don’t come from layer upon layer. In fact, my first piece of advice is often: leave the skin alone. It’s based on the same philosophy as “step back and give it space”. In the rush to get the skin right, there’s very rarely room for the skin to “just” be itself.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
The skin's protective barrier
Your skin is constantly renewing itself. All the time. If we look beneath the surface, we can see that the tissue is constantly producing new cells. The cells are pushed towards the surface of the skin by the new cells that are produced. On the surface of the skin, the cells are part of the skin's natural protective barrier. The skin can manage this process on its own, if it is allowed to. Too much, the wrong or overly active skincare can destroy the barrier.
“Think of the protective barrier as the roof of a house with roofing tiles. They have to be in place, intact and resistant, otherwise unwanted elements can penetrate.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel

What does the skin really need?
If we cut to the chase, it's actually quite simple: the skin needs to be supported, cleansed, well-moisturized, and well-protected.
- Cleanse your skin daily to remove dirt, pollution, dead skin cells, microbes, makeup, sunscreen residue, and more.
- Keep your skin well hydrated. When your skin becomes dry and dehydrated, the skin barrier no longer functions optimally. If your skin has to use all its “resources” to repair the skin barrier, there is less capacity for essential functions that help keep your skin healthy and vital. For example, when you drink water, it does not go directly to your skin, but it hydrates your body's cells and ensures that nutrients reach your skin.
- Protect your skin from harmful environmental influences. Air conditioning in the summer and radiator heating in the winter can make your skin dry and dehydrated. UV radiation can lead to sun damage, premature ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. This is one of the reasons why we recommend that you always supplement your daily skin care routine with sunscreen during the summer months.
- Support your skin with skincare products that work with your skin's natural processes. The skin can do much of the work itself to create the optimal conditions for being healthy, so choose skincare with active ingredients that help maintain well-hydrated, healthy skin with a strong skin barrier and good collagen production.
- Let your skin breathe. As you would air out your home or summer house after a long winter. You let your skin breathe through conscious breathing.
The body's third lung
“Your breathing and awareness of your breathing have a significant impact. Breathe through your nose and occasionally let your exhalations be longer than your inhalations. Make room for deeper breaths at least once an hour. The skin is called the body's third lung in traditional Chinese medicine TCM. There can be a clear connection between breathing and skin condition.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel

How to build a healthy skincare routine
An effective skincare routine is first and foremost one that you actually follow - otherwise it has no effect. By having a simple skincare routine, you can maintain it every morning and night. This means that the products are actually applied to the skin where they have an effect rather than sitting on the bathroom shelf and expire.
However, it is also important whether the products actually have an effect. You can apply a product to your skin every morning as part of your morning routine, but does it work? Does the product do anything for your skin? A product can easily be marketed as containing hyaluronic acid, but this is not a guarantee of either the quality or the quantity of the active substance. If you want to know more about ingredients and how to navigate the ingredient list on your skin care product, you can read more here .
Next, we recommend that you choose skincare products that support your skin’s natural processes. The skin can perform the important functions of maintaining its health on its own, and your skincare products should therefore not take over its functions. With too many products and too many layers, you risk over-treatment, hypersensitivity, irritation, inflammation and clogged pores.
Our 6 recommendations
1. Maintain a simple routine
Complicated routines often don't get done. It's easier to maintain a regular routine when it's uncomplicated and simple.
2. Protect the skin microbiome
When the skin is exposed to many products, layers and preservatives, it has a negative impact on the skin's microbiome. By using few products, you can avoid unnecessary side effects or reactions. You therefore provide better conditions for the skin's natural microbiome.
3. Avoid overstimulating the skin
The skin can be damaged by too many products and layers of highly active ingredients. Excessive use of highly active ingredients can cause overstimulation and can lead to hypersensitivity, irritation and skin imbalance. Your skin can become inflamed, which can lead to problems such as acne, rashes and redness. The skin may have difficulty absorbing all the ingredients, and this can lead to a build-up of product residue on the skin, which can block pores.
4. Let your skin breathe
Multiple layers of skin care can cover the skin and create an impermeable film. This prevents the skin from getting enough oxygen, which can lead to inflammation. If the skin cannot breathe, it can lead to reduced circulation in the skin and reduce the skin's ability to produce collagen. This can lead to a buildup of toxins and waste products in the skin.
5. Avoid allergic reactions
When you use few layers of skin care, you reduce the risk of allergic reactions, as there is less risk of exposing your skin to several different ingredients that can trigger an allergic reaction.
6. An extra protective layer
You should supplement your daily routine with sun protection when the UV index reaches 3 or above, as the sun's UV rays become strong enough to cause skin damage and burns.
