One Layer Skincare
The One Layer principle is one of the cornerstones of our dedication to promoting skin health and is based on the fact that the skin does not benefit from getting the most, but from the right things. One Layer is our take on a more responsible approach to skincare and beauty rituals in an industry that otherwise encourages you to increase your consumption through complicated routines and countless products. Go beneath the surface with our Skin & Fascia Specialist Katja Kunimori Hollnagel and learn why One Layer makes perfect sense – and not just for your skin.
Why “only” one layer?
We recommend one effective layer of skincare for three reasons:
- With one layer of skincare, you respect the skin's microbiome and support the skin's microbiome. The fewer products you use, the fewer preservatives you expose your skin to. This means you minimize unnecessary reactions due to preservatives and therefore provide better conditions for the skin's natural microbiome.
- With one layer of skin care, you avoid overstimulation of the skin which can lead to imbalance and stress responses. Excessive use of highly active ingredients can damage the skin and cause hypersensitivity.
- With one layer of skin care, your skin can breathe better. Multiple layers can cover the skin and create an impermeable film. This prevents the skin from functioning optimally and can cause inflammation.
A showdown with overconsumption
Unfortunately, there is a common misconception that effective and responsible skincare becomes an either-or choice. Both our skin and our planet benefit from “a less is more approach”, and that is precisely where balance and coherence lie in our One Layer approach. One layer of skincare is not only better for the skin, but also for our environmental footprint. You simply use fewer products and leave less cosmetic waste. Our One Layer skincare therefore eliminates overconsumption and offers a better alternative for your skin and for our planet.
A well-functioning skin barrier
" To put it simply, the skin consists of three layers. The outer layer is like the roof of a house, namely a waterproof protection for everything that is beneath the skin. If there are holes in the roof, it rains in and damages what’s inside. That is why it is so important to have a well-functioning roof or in this case a well-functioning skin barrier.
Your skin barrier is far from being “just” a canvas you use to present yourself to the outside world, but rather a layer of skin with a completely necessary and important function. However, it is not in the skin barrier that the magic happens. It is not here that collagen and elastin (the skin’s most important building blocks) are produced, but it is here that the foundation for healthy skin is laid.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
Healthy skin in the long run
"Our One Layer skincare supports the skin rather than taking over the work the skin can do itself. With one layer of skincare consisting of products with active ingredients, you give the skin the opportunity to do more with less. This way you create healthier skin, also over time." - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
From gold dust to snail slime
If you think about it, there are some of the strangest ingredients in skincare products - from collagen and 24-karat gold dust to snail slime and caviar. No matter how well-intentioned these strange ingredients are, there's always one essential question when it comes to whether an ingredient actually has an effect.
“Does it work or does it just sound like it works? The latter is what I call a “marketing molecule”. It looks good on paper and sounds promising, but the effect is debatable, as are the actual skin benefits.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
One layer of active ingredients
Our ingredient list is carefully crafted based on the premise that your skincare routine should consist of one layer of skincare. That one layer must be effective, otherwise the skincare will have no effect.
For the vast majority of manufacturers, the content of active ingredients is limited to 1%, and that is set high. If there is only 1% active in your skin care product, what is the rest? A good bet is water, if it is an emulsion, i.e. a cream-like consistency. It can also be oil or ingredients that do something for the product, but not for your skin. It can be preservatives, emulsifiers that unite oil and water and ensure uniformity in the product, color, fragrance, thickening agent and more.
We have one of the highest active ingredient contents on the market, which works best in one layer, so there is room for the skin to do as much of the work itself. By letting the skin work itself, it keeps moving and stays in better shape. It can be compared to the fact that it is healthier for the body to be in motion rather than being sedentary.
An extra protective layer
One of the most important skin care tips for the spring and summer months is quite simply: sun protection! We can’t stress enough how important it is to protect your skin. We therefore recommend that you supplement your daily routine with sun protection during the summer months. When the UV index reaches 3 or above, the sun’s UV rays become strong enough to cause skin damage and burns.

The cocktail effect
Think writes on their website that unwanted substances in a single product are rarely dangerous in themselves. It is the combined effect of chemical substances from everyday products - cosmetics, food, clothing and electronics - that poses a health risk. They call this the cocktail effect.
“When you add more layers and many products to your skin, you are not guaranteed a greater effect. On the contrary, you expose the skin to unnecessary overload. At best, you prevent your skin from working optimally, finding its own balance and taking care of everything from impurities to sensitive areas. At worst, you burden the body with unnecessary health risks.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
No unnecessary fillers
Our ingredient list is free of unnecessary fillers and the hyped ingredient of the month with no real effect. We also avoid microplastics, silicones, Teflon, synthetic sulfates or other chemicals that are harmful to the skin and, not least, the environment. Our skincare contains natural ingredients extracted from nourishing plants, herbs and wild Nordic berries, which are effective skincare ingredients.
How many products do you use?
“Studies show that an average European woman uses 9 different cosmetic products daily*. That’s a lot of products. That’s a lot of different messages to your skin in a day, and that’s a lot of doses of ingredients that don’t belong on and in the skin as such.” - Katja Kunimori Hollnagel
